Breakdown

Principles

“Then rule of thirds” over the summer I spent a good while taking photographs having no on paper experience whatsoever. I have never known or seen this term in all my career of being a self proclaimed artist. Well not until I enrolled in Art 125. Along with tis rule of thirds there also came other principles which has its relations with the rules of thirds. There are a few present in my execution of a typographical piece. The first is variety for my asymmetric piece.

Variety appears in the different fonts used, the different shades and or shade of each character within the piece. It appears in the symmetric piece only in font size.

The second is balance. Balance is the key to the symmetric design, if there were no balance then it will not be a symmetric design. Balance is the equality among the font itself, not necessarily the exact detentions but the weight of the fonts on the line of symmetry, which in this case happens the be vertical right down the center. Balance is also apparent in the asymmetric design. Although not as apparent as its symmetric counterpart, balance is present in the form of weight. More specifically the size and value of “UNITE” is relatively equal to “H+” and “solar” added together.

Proximity, I am no pro, at least not yet, but, I believe that proximity is a very important principle. It is apparent in both my asymmetric and symmetric designs as the overall dimensioning between the words and also the letters within those same words.

Scale I believe is a subcategory of balance, no pun intended, but it is apparent in both the symmetric and asymmetric designs. In the asymmetric design, it is the different size in fonts among the words. In the symmetric it is also the difference in the size on the fonts used in the words and also the lettering in the words solar and green with the exaggeration of the L and E, respectively. It gives us, along with the hydrogen element sort of a triangle, which is indeed the recycling symbol for the three parts of recycling:"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."

Unity , unity appears in both of the pieces, it is the sum of all the parts together. It is how solar compliments green in the symmetric and how solar and H+ balances UNITE in the asymmetric.

Together, all the principles work with the rule of thirds by directing the mind of the observer to his or her own perception of the piece. They help to provide a focal point for the observer while guiding them gently, or harshly to the next or secondary focal point and so on.

Communication

Communication of course is the basis of art, and of course this project. If it was not apparent that the basis of the design was sustainability, or something to do with an eco-friendly society, then the design was unsuccessful in communicating with the viewer. With ever design of course, there is a specific audience assigned. My audience basically is whoever. It targets the majority with its minimalism and lack of color. The design successfully gets the message across with its simplicity. It made the sacrifices necessary to make it simple. The colors, the flashy pictures etc. In that same way it should be possible and quite simple for everyday people to make sacrifices in creating a green earth.

Participation

This project helped my class participation and myself by allowing me to voice my opinion on things while communicating compromises between the designer behind the work and the professor. While speaking it also helped me as an individual to speak once in a while and not leave it up to art to communicate in the place of my own voice.

I like both of your designs. The only thin is green for your asymmetrical is to streched out and it's a little hard to read. Also what does H+ stand for? Does it mean water?
